Who We Are: The Real Story of We R Blighty CIC

We’re We R Blighty CIC. We’re not a charity with a fancy office. We’re not backed by big money. We’re just people — some veterans ourselves — who couldn’t sit by and watch mates slip through the cracks.

We exist for one reason. To help veterans who are struggling get back on their feet. No big mission statement. Just that.

What we actually do

Some days, it’s finding a bed for the night. Other days, it’s sorting safe housing for good.

We’ve paid for hotel rooms when someone’s had nowhere else to go. We’ve chased up mental health appointments, pointed people

to PTSD support, and filled out benefits forms with them. Sometimes we’ve sorted crisis funding just so they could eat or get where they needed to be.

We’ve also helped veterans get into training, find work, or reconnect with family. And we run the odd community event. Nothing fancy — just a space for people to meet, talk, and remember they’re not alone.

How we started (the short version)

This didn’t come from a whiteboard or some “vision workshop.” A few of us were just talking one day about mates we’d seen sleeping rough. People we’d served with.

It didn’t sit right. So we said: alright, let’s actually do something.

We registered as a Community Interest Comp

any in 2022. We didn’t want the red tape of a charity. We just wanted to get stuck in.

The numbers (because they do matter)

We have helped more than 200 veterans. That’s beds found, meals covered, emergency help given.

Sometimes we’ve gone from first contact to a safe bed in a matter of hours. Other times it’s taken a few days. We don’t time ourselves — we just move as quickly as we can, because waiting around can make things worse.

The people behind it

It’s small. Ben Mills, a veteran himself, started it all with his partner Danielle. They’ve roped in friends, volunteers, and anyone who’s willing to give their time.

Laura looks after housing stuff. Jolene’s an occupational therapist. The rest of us jump in where we’re needed — calls at night, runs to meet someone halfway across town, whatever it takes.

Why it matters to us

When you’ve been in the forces, people expect you to be tough forever. But life after service can knock the wind out of you.

We’ve seen it: no money, no bed, no idea where to go. Sometimes the system works. Sometimes it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t, that’s where we step in.

It’s not just about a bed or a meal. It’s about showing someone they still matter. That someone’s in their corner. You can watch a person start to stand a bit taller when they realise they’re not facing it alone.

How you fit in

If you’ve read this far, you’re already part of it in a way.

You might have skills. Time. Or just a willingness to share our name so the right person hears it. You might want to donate, volunteer, or just have a chat about what we do.

We’re open to it all.

We don’t talk in polished lines. But we’ll keep doing what we can, for as long as it takes, because we know what’s at stake.

If you want to talk to us, help us, or just keep an eye on what we’re doing, get in touch.

That’s how the good stuff starts.
